Catherine West MP, Minister for the Indo-Pacific, Visits Zhuhai for Roundtable on Business Challenges and Opportunities for British Companies

On Friday, 30th May, Catherine West MP, the UK’s Minister for the Indo-Pacific at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), visited Zhuhai. She was accompanied by Sarah Mann, HM Consul-General at the British Consulate-General Guangzhou, along with senior officials from the Trade and Investment and Political teams. The visit was organized by the British Chamber of Commerce South China and hosted by one of its member companies, Shield Works Precision Manufacturing Co., Ltd.

The roundtable brought together senior representatives from the British Government and prominent British businesses, highlighting the continued importance of strengthening collaboration between the UK and China.

The roundtable was held inside Shield Works‘ state-of-the-art, IP-secure manufacturing facility; itself a demonstration of what British business in China can look like at its best.

Discussions centred on the current business landscape in Zhuhai and the broader Greater Bay Area (GBA), focusing on both the challenges and emerging opportunities for British companies in the region. Topics included the local business climate, strategies for sustainable growth, and how the government and private sector can partner more effectively to navigate obstacles.

Key Discussion Highlights:

• Challenges and Opportunities for British Companies: Attendees shared valuable insights into the distinctive challenges British firms face in the GBA, while identifying opportunities for expansion and innovation.
  
• Support from the British Government: Government representatives outlined the range of support available to British businesses operating in China, including diplomatic engagement and access to strategic resources.
  
• Collaboration for Future Growth: The discussion emphasized the importance of deeper collaboration between UK enterprises and local partners to foster long-term, mutually beneficial growth.

During the session, Mark Clayton presented the British Business in China: Position Paper 2025 to Minister West. The document outlines key priorities and policy recommendations aimed at reinforcing UK-China business relations in the year ahead. It reflects the collective voice of British Chamber members across China and addresses regulatory challenges facing companies in the region. The paper offers practical solutions for both the Chinese and British governments and identifies areas of mutual opportunity that support sustainable economic development.

The Minister’s visit reinforced the UK Government’s commitment to enhancing economic and trade relations with China, while British businesses continue to navigate a complex yet promising regional landscape.

Zhuhai Business Networking Drinks @ Artyzen Habitat Hengqin Zhuhai

Later that afternoon, BritCham South China hosted a business networking drinks session at Artyzen Habitat Hengqin in Zhuhai with over 70 in attendance. Attendees included members from local and Macau-based foreign chambers. This informal gathering served as a platform for meaningful exchange among business leaders and professionals, celebrating the vibrant and evolving business environment of the GBA.

With a strong emphasis on collaboration, the event provided opportunities to forge new connections, strengthen existing relationships, and explore the region’s growing potential as a hub for international business growth.
