BritCham South China Expands Fujian-UK Business Ties with Landmark Xiamen Event
[Xiamen, 12th March]] – The British Chamber of Commerce South China (BritCham SC) has marked a significant milestone in its expansion efforts, hosting its first-ever event in Xiamen to highlight new opportunities for UK-China collaboration. The event, jointly held with the British Consulate-General in Guangzhou, brought together local Fujian business leaders and officials, including Sarah Mann, British Consul-General, and the Deputy Director of the Bureau of Commerce of Xiamen.

Strengthening Regional Cooperation
Delivering the final keynote address, Mark Clayton, Chairman of BritCham South China and CFO of British manufacturing group C2W, underlined the Chamber’s recent geographical expansion and growing commitment to businesses in Fujian and the wider South China region. “It’s a pleasure to be here in Xiamen—a city I have a personal connection with, as my father opened the first Metro supermarket here 20 years ago,” said Clayton.

“Today is Arbor Day in China, a day for planting trees. So, it feels especially meaningful that we’re here planting the seed of the British Chamber of Commerce in Xiamen, building the foundations for stronger business ties and future growth.”
Momentum in UK-China Engagement
Recent weeks have seen a remarkable increase in UK government delegations visiting China—more than in the past six years combined. “What’s exciting is that these visits are no longer confined to Beijing and Shanghai—they’re coming South, and that includes Fujian,” Clayton noted. “Last week we hosted a CBAM delegation from the UK Treasury, HMRC, and the Department for Business & Trade. Next week a UK Mayoral delegation arrives, and the following week, a Clean Energy delegation. This warming of relations creates tangible opportunities for businesses on both sides.”

Why Invest in the UK?
The UK continues to be a leading destination for Chinese investment, offering a stable legal environment, strong financial services, and global reach. As Chairman Clayton explained, “BritCham SC is well positioned to support Fujian-based companies exploring opportunities in the UK, connecting them with the right people, resources, and insights to succeed.”
Supporting Fujian Businesses
As part of its expansion, BritCham SC is rolling out new services tailored to South China-based enterprises:
- A Supply Chain Working Group connecting businesses with trusted UK partners in logistics, legal, and financial services.
- A new membership category designed specifically for Chinese firms seeking to access the UK market, including curated networking, expert-led seminars, and facilitated introductions.
Advocacy and Strategic Insight
The event also highlighted the BritCham China Position Paper, a key annual advocacy document widely regarded by policymakers in both London and Beijing. The paper outlines opportunities and barriers in UK-China trade and is available to download via the Chamber’s website. BritCham SC welcomes future contributions from Fujian businesses to shape the next edition.
Looking Ahead: 30 Years of Impact
Next year marks the 30th anniversary of BritCham South China, with a special gala celebration planned for May or June 2026 in Guangzhou. This milestone reflects nearly three decades of work supporting UK-China trade and investment.
As UK-China business ties continue to deepen, BritCham SC remains committed to being a trusted bridge for Fujian enterprises, helping them connect, grow, and succeed on the global stage.
